Beauty Tips

KEEP YOUR HAIR SHINY & HEALTY

The computer-generated irid essence seen in hair commercials is hard to match in the real world, but even the most lackluster locks can get a shine boost with the right treatments for healthy hair.

"Just as nails have a protective cuticle barrier, so does your hair, and the key to a healthy sheen is keeping the cuticle smooth," says London-based scalp-and-hair specialist Philip Kingsley, author of The Hair Bible.

Under a microscope, a smooth cuticle looks like a roof with all the shingles lying flat, but day-to-day styling, heat processing, and coloring cause those shingles to lift. "Light reflects best off a smooth surface, so a roughed-up cuticle means dull hair," says Robert Hallowell, who styles celebrities' hair in South Pasadena, CA. Here are a few beauty tips to really get your hair to glimmer.

1. Eat right. Hair is made of keratin, a form of protein, so don't skimp on protein-packed lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and low-fat dairy products, says Kingsley. He also recommends getting plenty of healthy omega-3 fats, which are found in salmon, soybeans, flaxseed oil, and walnuts. "Eating these can increase hair's sheen over time," he says. Nutrition interventions take time—expect to show off new shine in about 6 months.

2. Come clean. If you're a styling-product junkie who wants shiny hair, you'll need to banish the buildup, which is a guaranteed shine squelcher. Once a week, use a clarifying shampoo such as Alba Botanica Clarifying Shampoo ($10; albabotanica.com), or try this tip from Hallowell: Once a month, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 2 tablespoons of your shampoo. "The sodium bicarbonate will remove any stubborn, sticky residue," he says.

3. Condition hair often. In fact, do it every time you shampoo. Choose nutrient-rich formulas with ingredients such as avocado oil, olive oil, or shea butter, which moisturize and fill in tiny cracks in the hair shaft. One to try: Garnier Fructis Haircare Triple Nutrition Fortifying Cream Conditioner ($4.50; drugstores).

4. Skip the cold-water rinse. There's no need to undergo the big chill. "Cold water may help close your pores, but it doesn't affect the hair cuticle in the same way," says Kingsley.

Tip: Gently squeeze and blot—don't rub—hair when you towel dry. "Wet hair is fragile, and any friction will rough up the cuticle," says Kingsley.

5. Practice damage control. Always use a heat-resistant product on your hair before blow drying. New formulations seal in shine and prevent damage from superhigh temperatures. Try Pantene Heat Protection & Shine Sprays ($6; drugstores). To further protect hair, use a blow dryer with features that match your hair type and style.

Tip: Occasionally use your blow-dryer's cool setting to dry your hair.

6. Get glossy. Make sure that your shine serum is water soluble—look for dimethiconol on the label, not dimethicone. "Dimethicone, the silicone polymer known for creating a glassy effect, doesn't rinse off easily if it's not in a water-soluble form. And if it builds up, it eventually dries out hair," says Kingsley. Try Redken Glass 01 Smoothing Serum ($15; redken.com for salons).

Tip: Sleep on satin pillowcases for equally satiny hair. At night, the average head is 9 pounds of deadweight, and friction from tossing and turning equals fuzz.

7. Brush with the best. Boar-bristle brushes (or boar bristle with nylon) are superior for smoothing hair and distributing natural oils. Plastics don't have as much give and can snag and break hair, so consider pricier options a shiny hair investment. Try Umberto Beverly Hills Boar Bristle Brush ($11; Target).

Tip: Skip those 100 brush strokes before bed. It's a myth that you can condition your hair by repeatedly stroking scalp oils down the shaft. "Your scalp would have to be very oily for this to really work, and all that brushing will tax your hair," says Hallowell.

8. Recipe for shiny hair: Hallowell's Vodka Mask

In a small glass bowl, using a fork, mash half of a peeled and pitted avocado, 2 Tbsp vodka, 2 Tbsp honey, and 1 egg to form a creamy mixture. Apply to freshly shampooed, towel-blotted hair. Leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse well with warm water, then shampoo and style as usual.

COLOR TREATMENT

STYLE YOUR HAIR DAILY

Your Shower To-Dos

Keep the water temperature warm or lukewarm -- a hot shower can expand the hair cuticle, allowing pigment molecules to escape -- and don't feel compelled to shampoo daily if you don't have to, since detergents can prematurely fade dye. Color-treated tresses should only be cleansed and conditioned with "color-safe" products, which are brewed to prevent leaching pigment from your pricey dye job.

Dye Hard

With an endless array of color and styling choices available at our fingertips, today’s hair habits have left us with locks that are more overworked than ever. An individual strand of hair can continue to grow for approximately 3-6 years. During this time, it’s exposed to a serious amount of stress; including brushing, washing, styling, handling, chemical treatments and the like—which can cause your color to fade.

All this wear and tearwill eventually diminish its natural proteins, and as your mane is less able to reflect light, it may appear dull and one-dimensional. Keeping your hair healthy is the best way to make vibrant color last; damaged hair doesn’t have what it needs to hold on to the pigment in your hair dye.

Wash It In
The worst offender in fading color is your shower faucet. Invest in a good shower filter that blasts calcium deposits, and wash hair every other day to prevent your hue from disappearing. Massage a color-shielding formula, like Advanced HaircareColor Vibrancy Shampoo, into the scalp with the soft tips of your fingers (not the fingernails) for 30 seconds.

Rinse the hair with lukewarm water and apply Advanced Haircare Color Vibrancy Nourishing Conditioner to seal in the color-protecting powers. Over time, the formulas with antioxidant and UV filters will strengthen and vivify your tinted tresses.

Follow Up

Tend to your coloreven on days when you skip the shampoo and conditioner. Spritz Advanced HaircareColor Vibrancy Dual Protect Spray, a dual-action leave-in spray with powerful UV filters, onto damp or dry hair. This spray will safeguard your hair and scalp from styling temperatures up to 450 degrees and will do wonders on knots and tangles. The daily go-to formula could also be a great “reset” alternative to water when re-styling a section of the hair.

Step #1: Brush Your Hair
It may seem like the obvious thing to do, but maybe what you didn't know is that brushing keeps your hair tangle free and distributes its natural oils throughout the hair. This promotes healthy growth and shine.

Step #2: Wash Your Hair
How often you wash your hair depends on your hair type and texture. Work out what's best for you by seeing how your hair reacts to washing and hair care products, and develop a schedule from there. For instance:

Your hair is coarse/dry if it often feels brittle- this means you only need to wash it every second or third day.
Your hair is fine/oily if it feels greasy the day after you wash it- this means you need to wash it daily.
Your hair is normal if you wash it one day and it's not too greasy the next- this means you can get away with washing it every other day.
Shampoo Tips

Remember to shampoo in small, circular movements; don't forget to target dirt collecting areas such as the nape of your neck.
Massaging your scalp will increase blood flow which encourages growth and will stimulate your hair's natural oils (producing shiny locks).
Coarse/dry hair will benefit from hydrating shampoos.
Fine/oily hair should be washed with a clear shampoo (one that doesn't look creamy).
Normal hair can use just about any type of shampoo- just remember to always use good quality products for the best results.
Conditioner Tips

Similar to body lotion for your skin, conditioner is moisturizer for your hair and will keep your strands hydrated and manageable.
For an even application use your hands and a wide-toothed comb.
If you've got coarse/dry hair try a hydrating conditioner and apply it right from your roots to your ends.
For fine/oily hair use a lightweight conditioner and avoid putting it on your roots (evenly distribute it from the mid-lengths to the ends).
For normal hair you can use just about any kind of conditioner, applied from your roots to your ends also.
Step #3: Apply Hair Styling Products
If you have a hairstyle that needs to use hair products- hairspray for hold, wax for hold and shine, or serum for shine and to maintain fly-away pieces- then don't use too much! You might end up weighing your hair down and reducing its volume, or just making it greasy and dirty. Often less is more.

Also, don't forget to protect your hair. If you style your hair with a hair straightener or blow-dryer, it's very important to protect your hair with heat protecting products, and to give your hair a break every few days from the stress of using hair accessories and hairstyling tools.

Step #4: Style Your Hair
Everyone styles their hair, whether they're elaborate updos, professional looking hairdos for work, or casual wash-and-wear looks. Styling is required daily and should be done as gently as possible.

Step #5: Brush Your Hair Again at Night
Brushing your hair again at night will help you to untangle any knots that made their way into your locks during the day.

Step #6: Secure Your Hair at Night
Securing your hair at night with a simple ponytail or plait will make sure your locks don't get snagged or tangled as you sleep.

There you have it, a simple daily routine (and some great hair care tips). It's not hard to follow, it won't have you spending all of your hard earned cash, and most importantly, it will get your hair in the best condition possible.

Now that you know how to look after your hair, why don't you find a style to show off your fabulous looks!
